Meet the Artists: Aimia | AGO Photography Prize Nominees & Selectors

Join us for an evening with the four extraordinary artists shortlisted for the 2013 Aimia | AGO Photography Prize: Edgardo AragónLaToya Ruby Frazier, Chino Otsuka and Erin Shirreff. The artists will appear in conversation with nominators Jennifer Blessing, Senior Curator of Photography at the Guggenheim Museum, New York, and Helga Pakasaar, Curator at Presentation House Gallery, Vancouver.

The discussion will be divided in two parts, with panels moderated by Elizabeth Smith, 2013 Lead Juror and former Executive Director, Curatorial Affairs at the AGO, and Sophie Hackett, Associate Curator, Photography at the AGO.

Panel One: The Image is an Instrument
7 pm

Moderated by lead juror Elizabeth Smith, Executive Director of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, and featuring the shortlisted artists Edgardo Aragon, LaToya Ruby Frazier and nominator Jennifer Blessing, Senior Curator, Photography at the Guggenheim Museum. This discussion will examine the ways that contemporary photographers reinvigorate the conventions of landscape, portraiture, and social documentary photography to examine the challenging social and political realities of their homelands.

Panel Two: The Image is a Fragment
8 pm

Moderated by Sophie Hackett, Associate Curator, Photography at the AGO, and featuring shortlisted artists Erin Shirreff, Chino Otsuka and Helga Pakasaar, Curator at Presentation House Gallery, Vancouver. Panelists will discuss the impact of time, context, and objecthood on contemporary photographic practices, especially as they draw attention to the power of perception.
