EXHIBITION OVERVIEW
James Gillray (1756-1815) was a leading satirist during the "golden age" of British caricature at the end of the 18th century. The exhibition includes approximately 30 etchings which ridicule the antics of the royal family and famous political personalities, and lampoon the foibles of Georgian society. Gillray was a master draftsman with an inventive, sometimes vicious, sense of humour. His prints were usually brilliantly hand-coloured, and the AGO has some outstanding examples, purchased with funds donated by the Trier-Fodor foundation.
