This selection from the Gallery's substantial collection of portraits reveals a range of attitudes towards artists, writers and performers. From the formal portraits at the beginning of the nineteenth century to early twentieth century caricatures and surrealist fantasies, the artistic personality of the sitter is explored in turn as genius, mentor and muse.
