Art of Drawing in the Galleries: 10 weeks

This course combines drawing with art appreciation. Learn how to draw while in the company of master works and innovative contemporary art. Each week we'll visit an area of the AGO to work on drawing concepts and skills through exercises, observation and discussion of the art and artists on exhibition.

This is a comprehensive course that provides a grounding in drawing skills and concepts while increasing your familiarity with the gallery and appreciation for the methods and subjects of its artists. We will travel through the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions of the gallery, drawing in the Henry Moore room, African galleries, European salons, and Thomson and Canadian galleries on the second floor. We'll respond to exciting contemporary work on the 4th and 5th floors, undertake value sketches in the photography galleries, and study perspective and depth under the dramatic vaulted windows of the Galleria Italia. Drawing lessons will cover: contour, cross contour and gesture; positive form and negative space; light and shadow; value; composition; proportion and perspective; and the basics of portraiture and landscape.

Students are asked to bring the following supplies: an 11" x 14" coil-bound sketchbook, a set of soft pencils (B through 9B, or one each of 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B), a knead-able eraser and a white vinyl eraser, a set of 24 watercolour pencils, a self-contained pencil sharpener.

Students are asked to print out a copy of their receipt and gather in the Community Gallery located in the WFLC for the start of the first class. Receipt must be presented at the start of each class. Please check any oversized bags and outerwear.
