Art & Ideas: Wonder

Once upon a time we wondered at the world. Wonder was the standard we used to assess the innovation and creativity of artistic practice and the beauty of works of art. And then... something happened to us ... something happened to us both Individually and collectively. We seemed to have lost that ability to stand in awe at the world. The very word has fallen out of our vocabulary. Has the age of wonder passed? Can we get our wonder back? If so, how? Join Wendy O’Brien on an exploration of wonder that combines deep looking and conversations on specific artworks in the AGO collection, with making and doing in the studio. Through the investigation of works by artists including Rubens, Riopelle, Harris, and Stettheimer, we will consider and compare artworks of monstrous scenes with those inspiring beauty; move through the extraordinary and the ordinary; and conclude by reflecting on whether the source of wonder is to be found in ourselves or in the world. Activities will range from walking exercises, to unconventional looking, representational sculpture, and abstract drawing. Accompanied by a selection of inspiring readings, students will be encouraged to rediscover their wonder.

This workshop meets in the Dr. Anne Tanenbaum Gallery School. All materials included.
