Multimedia Experimentations: Today’s Artist (14-18yrs)

We take our initial inspiration and learning modules this season from the spanning careers of two powerhouses of abstract painting, American Joan Mitchell and Canadian Jean Paul Riopelle. With a significant exhibition of their work currently at the AGO, we will discuss two unique artists who shared both a personal and professional relationship, and which can be tracked through the blending and separation of their respective painting styles. The contrasts and comparisons will help students develop their own sense of emotion and feeling through abstraction. From there, we consider contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama’s brilliant multimedia practice, and encourage students to develop their own voices further through a selection of multimedia approaches. Students will reflect upon a career spanning artistic practice – Kusama is still working at 88 years -- that includes abstract painting, printmaking, performance art and built environments. As we move into developing our contemporary practices, we will acknowledge both the foundational value of artists that proceed us, and balance it with the artist’s impulse to create new work that reflects and socially engages with our contemporary world today.

Our youth classes are intensive studio courses with a focus on contemporary art making. Multimedia Experimentation is an ideal foundational course for anyone considering a career in the creative arts. It supports the development of a robust body of work from each student across a range of disciplines. It is also the entry point for further explorations focused on a combination of traditional and digital arts and reflecting contemporary art trends and practices. Students work with highly qualified instructors who are practicing artists. Instructors respond to the needs and skill sets of each student both individually and as a group, fostering a supportive, engaging, collaborative and experimental environment. Students will explore the freedom and blurriness amongst genres all the while discussing the many artists who express themselves through a variety of media including painting, sculpture, performance, video and digital. Materials and processes for this course might focus on or include painting, drawing, printmaking, mixed and new media, installation and 3-D construction/sculpture.

Courses are inspired by current exhibitions and other highlights from the AGO's collections.

All materials are included. This course meets in the AGO's Anne Tanenbaum Gallery School.
