The March First Thursday: Down the Rabbit Hole

Thursday, March 1, 2018
Art Gallery of Ontario

Manifest a new reality in the mirror of your mind! For this Yayoi Kusama-inspired First Thursday, the AGO partners with OCAD University’s Graduate Criticism & Curatorial Practice candidates to guide guests Down the Rabbit Hole—shedding the familiar and unlocking doors to unknown realms. Taking as starting point Kusama’s own claim of being a “modern day Alice in Wonderland,” the night’s program will echo the ways her work inspires us to step over thresholds into enchanted worlds that challenge our perceptions.

Headlining the night is Montreal band TOPS, with their dreamy synthpop sounds guiding visitors through a hypnotic dreamscape on the mainstage in Walker Court. You can also expect a live performance of Multiforms by choreographer Amanda Acorn, sure to awaken our senses with exploration of the human condition. Also showing will be the sculptural forms of Hoda Zarbaf, inviting viewers to reinterpret familiar spaces with surprising interventions, and Yoshiki Nishimura’s Synthetic-free experimental video work, where real and virtual worlds meld.

In addition, don’t miss a collage party led by artist Leeay Aikawa or pop-up talks hosted by the Angry Asian Feminist Gang and visual perception researcher Dirk Bernhardt-Walther. Beats will be provided by Synthesexer in Walker Court, and DJ Denise Benson and, as always, there will be delectable bites and beverages featured in the Night Market. The night’s unique artists-designed program will be created by Leeay Aikawa.

First Thursday + Kusama FAQs

Combo Tickets

What is a First Thursday combo ticket?

A First Thursday combo ticket is a both a First Thursday ticket as well as admission to the special exhibition on view. For the May First Thursday, it would be a ticket to the May First Thursday as well as a timed entry to Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors.

Can I buy tickets at the door?

First Thursdays consistently sell out and tickets are not held back for at-the-door purchase.

I was only able to get a First Thursday Ticket. Can I upgrade to a combo ticket when I’m there?

No. Once May First Thursday combo tickets are sold out, we will have reached capacity in the exhibition and will not be able to offer more timeslots.

I wasn’t able to get May First Thursday Combo tickets. When is the next opportunity to get tickets to Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors?

During the run of the show, there will be a very limited number of same-day timed tickets released at the AGO each day at 10 am. There will be a two ticket per person limit. Pending availability, visitors will be able to purchase up to two tickets and Members will be able to receive up to two tickets for free. There will not be a separate line for AGO Members looking to receive same-day tickets. You cannot hold a spot in the line for another person.

Please note that the same-day line will form outside on the sidewalk in front of the Gallery. Please dress for the weather.

What if I miss my ticketed entry time to Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors?

Unfortunately, tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable. If you arrive more than 15 minutes after the time on your ticket, we will attempt to admit you at the next available timeslot, but entry is not guaranteed.

Can I buy First Thursday tickets outside of the AGO?

The AGO is the only authorized seller of First Thursday and Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors tickets. Unauthorized duplication or sale of a ticket may prevent admittance. Visitors may be asked to provide photo ID at entry. Visitors who purchase resale tickets risk being disappointed and being denied admittance to the exhibition.

If you have any questions about the validity of any online ticket offers, please call Visitor Services at 416-979-6648.
