Introduction to Drawing

This course introduces students to a range of drawing techniques through exercises designed to develop an awareness of line, volume, form and colour. Working with pencil, graphite, and charcoal, this course draws upon the AGO's collections for inspiration and provides a solid foundation in drawing techniques to prepare you for further study at the AGO.

This course is suitable for all skill levels. Meet in the Dr. Anne Tanenbaum Gallery School.

Week 1: The Gray Scale and Value

Week 2: Line Drawing and Texture

Week 3: Continued study of Line and Value

Week 4: Subtractive Drawing and Negative Space

Week 5: Perspective as an Observational tool  

Week 6: Landscape Drawing and Colour

Week 7: Portraiture and Grid Drawing                               

Week 8: Mark Making and Abstraction                 

Week 9: Directional Drawing                                           

Week 10: Drawing the figure                                                 

STUDENT MATERIAL LIST 

Drawing tools:

  • Conte Sticks: 2B (2 black, 2 white, 1 sanguine)
  • 2x Compressed Charcoal 4B ( General’s is a brand.)
  • Graphite Pencils: a set or individual pencils including 2B, 4B, 6B
  • 1 White Conte Pencil
  • Erasers: 1 or 2  white plastic eraser (Staedler Mars suggested)
  • Cylinder Tub Pencil sharpener with two holes.(Staedler suggested)
  • A set of watercolour pencil crayons (General Kimberley vibrant suggested)
  • Paper stomp. (A package of small stomps suggested)
  • Sakura Pigma Micron 1 Black Pen, 1 Red Pen or any similar black felt fine tip pen plus one medium black felt tip pen
  • A box of 12 Semi Hard Soft Pastels. (Suggested brand Mungyo Gallery) Not Oil Pastels!

Drawing surfaces:

  • Pad of Cartridge Paper 18 x 24 inch
  • Pad of Kraft Paper 18”x24”
  • 2 Pastel papers: 19 x 25 inch mid tone colours (suggested 1 Ultramarine or Nut and 1 Red or Primary Blue) Canson Colorline suggested brand.
  • 1 Watercolour Paper 22”x30” (Fabriano Studio Cold Press Watercolour Paper 300g)
  • Small sketchbook

These are the recommended materials for this course. All sizes are approximate. On your first day of class, your instructor may recommend additional optional materials. Our Instructors will do their best to accommodate alternative materials whenever possible.
