ONLINE PAINTING EXPLORATIONS: INSPIRED BY PICASSO'S BLUE PERIOD

Did you know Picasso was in his early 20’s when he created paintings now famously considered his blue period? You too could be the next Picasso, whatever your age, as we consider the artist’s choice in using cool colours to reflect a sense of personal loss and empathy for others. This online course will reflect on an important new exhibition curated by the AGO, linking and advancing science and art history research.

WEEKLY OUTLINE 

Week 1: Introduction to blue. History of and characteristics of various blue pigments. 

Week 2: Colour and form. Introduction to colour concepts, and mixing. Glazing and spatial effects of blue through a figurative or landscape artwork.

Week 3: Portrait and Conceptual Intent

Week 4: Abstraction and Material Exploration or Finalizing Projects

 

STUDENT MATERIAL LIST 

Acrylic paints, brand of your choice, one tube of each colour, approximately 120 ml/5oz: 

  • 2 types of blue: A primary/process blue and ultramarine
  • Primary or magenta red 
  • Primary yellow 
  • Black
  • Raw umber 
  • Dioxazine purple 
  • A larger tube of titanium white 240ml/10oz 
  • Acrylic matte medium (not gel) 120 ml/5oz or similar

Brushes:

  • A large flat 2 inch chip/utility/house painters brush
  • 2 medium sized filbert brushes (i.e. ½ and ¾ inch hog bristle), 
  • 1 round brush that makes a nice point 
  • Any other brushes you would like use
  • Palette Knives. 2-3 or more, various plastic or metal palette knives; Trowel and any other shape.
  • Pencil 
  • Ruler or a straight edge
  • Masking tape

Surfaces:

  • 4 or more primed canvas boards/panels or primed stretched canvases; 12 x 16, 16 x 20 inch (your choice).
  • A pad of paper that can take acrylic paint, approximately 12 x 16 inch (inexpensive watercolour or printmaking paper can work). Alternatively, 4 or more individual sheets about 18 x 24 inch. (Cougar cover stock 200m or similar from Aboveground Art Supplies works well).

Palette:

  • A flat stiff surface covered with wax paper or aluminum foil, a disposable palette pad, foam or plastic plates or trays (white is ideal).
  • Painting rag: cotton cloth, or paper towel
  • Water container: 450ml-750ml vessel that you will not use to drink from.

Still Life Objects: 

  • 2 -3 pieces of fruit, wine bottle and or other objects around the house for still life set up, and a piece of fabric (without a pattern) to place your objects on.
  • A desk lamp to light it with. 
  • Optional: Inexpensive Styrofoam cones, sphere and cube shapes, 5 pieces.

These are the recommended materials for this course. All sizes are approximate. On your first day of class, your instructor may recommend additional optional materials. Our Instructor’s will do their best to accommodate alternative materials whenever possible.

  • Any other brushes you would like to use.

Surfaces:

  • 4 or more primed canvas boards/panels or primed stretched canvases: 16 X 20 inch.
  • A pad of paper bond 16 X 20” or larger

 Palette:

  • Foam or plastic plate(s) or tray(s) - white is ideal. Something with a lip or edge to hold the paint and a little liquid.
  • HB pencil and eraser
  • Water spritzer/spray bottle
  • Large yogurt containers or similar for water 
  • Painting rags and or paper towel

These are the recommended materials for this course. All sizes are approximate. On your first day of class, your instructor may recommend additional optional materials. Our Instructor’s will do their best to accommodate alternative materials whenever possible.

Art Education Policies - courses

Policies

Please read the following policies when you prepare your registration to AGO Education courses and camps.

  • Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis and is limited to space restrictions.
  • Advance registration is recommended for all programs.
  • Registration is confirmed only upon receipt of payment.
  • All registration is subject to availability.
  • All programs, prices and instructors are subject to change without notice.
  • The AGO has the right to remove students from classes. (remove if they are disruptive).

Withdrawals and Refunds

Courses

  • Refunds are available in full 5 days before the start of the first class, minus a $15 administration fee.
  • For all courses a withdrawal is allowed before the start of the second class, minus a $50 administration fee.
  • Withdrawals after the start of the second class are non-refundable.
  • One day workshops are non-refundable. 
  • Absence does not constitute a withdrawal.
  • Courses are not transferable.
  • Withdrawal requests must be done by email through the Contact Centre at contactus@ago.ca.

Cancellation of Classes

  • To ensure that we are able to run your preferred classes, we recommend that you enroll at least two weeks prior to the commencement of the program.
  • In the event of course cancellation, registrants will be notified 3 days prior to the scheduled commencement of the course and a full refund will be given.
