Snow Storm - Steam-Boat off a Harbour's Mouth

Painting Explorations: Impressionist Art

Inspired by the exhibition, Steam: Impressionist Painting Across the Atlantic, this course delves into the dynamic and diverse landscape of Impressionism expressed through paint. The exhibition showcases the impact travel had on artists from France, England and Canada, sparking and spreading as it did the style of painting we now call Impressionism. Students will be encouraged to bring in their own source images inspired by their travels. This course invites students to engage with the techniques, concepts, and philosophies that define Impressionism. Students will explore how artists have pushed the boundaries of tradition, challenging conventional aesthetics and narrative forms. Through hands-on experimentation and critical analysis of renowned artworks, participants will develop a deeper understanding of color theory, composition, and the power of visual exploration.

This course is suitable for individuals with some painting experience. To get the most out of this course, we recommend taking Introduction to Painting first. Meet in the Dr. Anne Tanenbaum Gallery School.
