Painting Explorations: Landscapes ONLINE

In this online course we’ll be inspired by landscape paintings in the AGO collection as well as the seasonal landscape around us. We’ll explore painting elements such as gesture, composition and colour and experiment with a range of acrylic painting techniques to develop an awareness of line, volume, form to create your own landscape paintings.

Terms and Conditions of Participation in Online Courses.

Participants must be 18 or older. Spots are limited. Some prior experience with the medium is recommended.

(NOTE: This course skips over April 2nd for Easter Weekend)

Students to supply their own materials. 

Week 1: Explore space through value with opaque paint and glazing techniques. Create a greyscale painting of an invented simplified landscape.

Week 2: Explore space through value, hue and saturation with opaque and translucent paint. Create a full-colour painting based on an abstract paint collage.

Week 3: Explore painting through layers. Create a painting, based on a shared photographic image, by building up from an underpainting and completing it with glazing.

Week 4: Linear perspective and other ways of creating visual depth. Begin a painting that incorporates perspective based on a shared photographic image or an image of your choice.

Week 5: Pulling it all together. Continued work on the painting from the previous class, considering several ways of creating depth and incorporating a range of painting applications and techniques.

Above Ground Art Supplies (discount code: AGOSTUDENT10), Curry’s, DeSerres, Gwartzman’s, Michaels, or any other art supply or discount craft store. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, delays to orders and shipments are very possible. Our instructors will do their best to accommodate alternative materials.

Acrylic paint: Brand of your choice (Example: Amsterdam standard series, 120 ml/5 oz)

Essential colours: primary blue, primary yellow, primary red, titanium white and burnt umber Optional colours: ultramarine blue, phthalo blue, magenta, sap green, etc…

Acrylic medium (not gel): Gloss or matte, 8 or 16 oz

Brushes for acrylic paint: Hog hair bristle or synthetic brushes with a Filbert shape tip are recommended. Three varieties or sizes are ideal: small (#2 or 3, 7 – 9 mm wide), medium (#4 or 5, 1 – 1.2 cm wide), Large (#10, about 2 cm wide). Also a 2” (5 cm wide) house painter’s brush (hardware store).

Paint Surfaces and gesso. Choose one option:

Option 1: Canson XL Mixed Media Pad 11” x 14” or 18” x 24”. Each sheet can be primed with gesso (16 oz, student would purchase gesso).

or Option 2: Four primed stretched canvases or canvas panels 11” x 14” to 18” x 24”

or Option 3: Canson Canva-paper pad 16” x 20”(Canvas paper pad of any brand)

Palette: A flat stiff surface covered with wax paper or aluminum foil, a disposable palette pad, foam or plastic plates or trays (white would be ideal)

Cotton rag

Water container: 450ml – 750ml vessel, anything you will not use to drink from.

Art Education Policies


Please read the following policies when you prepare your registration to AGO Education courses and camps.

  • Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis and is limited to space restrictions.
  • Advance registration is recommended for all programs.
  • Registration is confirmed only upon receipt of payment.
  • All registration is subject to availability.
  • All programs, prices and instructors are subject to change without notice.
  • The AGO has the right to remove students from classes. (remove if they are disruptive).

Withdrawals and Refunds


  • Refunds are available in full 5 days before the start of the first class, minus a $15 administration fee.
  • For all courses a withdrawal is allowed before the start of the second class, minus a $50 administration fee.
  • Withdrawals after the start of the second class are non-refundable.
  • One day workshops are non-refundable. 
  • Absence does not constitute a withdrawal.
  • Courses are not transferable.
  • Withdrawal requests must be done by email through the Contact Centre at contactus@ago.ca.

Cancellation of Classes

  • To ensure that we are able to run your preferred classes, we recommend that you enroll at least two weeks prior to the commencement of the program.
  • In the event of course cancellation, registrants will be notified 3 days prior to the scheduled commencement of the course and a full refund will be given.
