Children sculpture class

Sculpture Explorations: Animals

Age 8-10

Get inspired by the AGO’s awesome new outdoor sculpture, Brian Jungen’s Couch Monster: Sadzěʔ yaaghęhch’ill and create your own 3-D art. In this sculpture class you’ll bring your favourite animals to life (real and imagined), while exploring a variety of techniques and using materials such as plasticine, paper, and found objects.

This class is for beginners and returning students. The instructor will teach to each students' individual skill level. All materials are included. Meet in the Dr. Anne Tanenbaum Gallery School.

Week 1: Light as Feather. This week we will be exploring volume and line.  We will create exquisite light weight sculptures of flying creatures using the techniques of quilling and wireframing.

Week 2: Found Animals. This week we will work with found and recycled materials and will concentrate on using found shapes, volumes and colours to guide our sculptural creations.

Week 3: Cardboard Zoo. Working with planar elements in cardboard we will create 3D creatures that have elements that can move, fold and turn.

Week 4: Natural impressions. Working with materials found in nature such as twigs, leaves and pinecones, we will collaboratively create a relief sculpture frieze.

Week 5: Animal portraits. Taking a traditional sculptural format of the head and shoulders (bust) as an inspiration, we will create 3D portraits of our favourite animals in clay.
