Online Side by Side: Spring Time (4-6 yrs. with an Adult)
This course skips Victoria Day Weekend (May 21-23)
Springtime will be the theme as we explore making art in fresh and unexpected ways, encouraging us to grow our ideas and skills. Have fun getting creative, learning about the AGO collection, and making art alongside your young artist. In this online course, children with an adult caregiver will explore exciting artmaking techniques and learn how to reinvent art materials while working on individual and shared projects.

WEEKLY OUTLINE
Week 1: All is connected- Wisdom of the Universe
Simple lines, bright colours and simple shapes will help us make artwork about the connections between insects, birds, and plants. Simple drawing and stamping techniques will be introduced.
Week 2: Out of the ground - Make a Seedling Grow
This week we will work on 3D shapes in plasticine and we will see if we can make a seedling grow into a fantastic plant. Simple clay shaping and Claymation techniques will be introduced.
Week 3: Native Wonders- Only Seen in Spring
Today we will notice and celebrate the tender native flowers that only bloom during the springtime. We will create some bright and gentle drawings using pastels.
Week 4: I Hear Thunder- Wet and Rainy Day
Working on paper and using simple transfer and printmaking techniques, we create a painted rainy day landscape, concentrating on the experiences of water-based techniques in artmaking.
Week 5: I Feel the Air- Windy Day
This day is the celebration of the spring traditions around the world, of air, wind and movement. We will work on a kinetic 3D project that can be moved and activated by the movement of air.
STUDENT MATERIAL LIST
For every week:
- Pencils HB or 2B
- Scissors, a pair each, strong enough to cut out shapes from cereal boxes
- Glue sticks
- Masking Tape
Week 1:
- Markers - 1 multicolour set, to share
- 1 sheet of craft foam, Scratch Foam, or a styrofoam tray
- Large white paper 12x 18 inches, 1 per participant
- Cardboard rectangles or cut up cereal boxes – save and reuse
Week 2:
- Access to smartphone or digital camera
- Plasticine, an assorted pack or 3 separate colours: green, yellow, red, and more if you have them. A golf ball size of each colour for each person.
- Pipe cleaners
- A larger side of cereal box cut out or rectangular piece of cardboard. This will be the base for our artwork. Suggested size 9x12 inches or larger
- Optional: toothpicks, spare marker caps
Week 3:
- Black paper: 9x12 inches, 3 per participant
- Oil pastel or chalk pastel set, to share
- Regular office paper (for sketching) 3 sheets each
Week 4:
- Newspapers to cover up your work area, or craft paper, or drop cloth.
- A place to dry or hang your wet artwork
- Paint set: watercolour or tempera
- Paint Brushes: 1 small and one larger each
- Paper or pie plate for mixing colours and yogurt container for rinsing brushes
- Stiff white paper to paint on, 9x12 inches: cardstock or watercolour: 3 sheets each
- Wax crayons, light colours: yellow, white, green
- Markers and coloured pencils
- Cardboard rectangles or cut up cereal boxes
- Wax paper: 4 sheets or 4 pieces from a roll
- Plastic food wrap film and tinfoil for making “prints”, 5 x 8 inch sheets, plus extra.
- Materials for textures: bubble wrap, a small pieces of a sponge, a fork, a couple of popsicle sticks, a couple of Q-Tips, and cereal box cardboard pieces
Week 5:
- Parchment paper roll, or 2 pieces 20 inches long from a roll (1 per participant)
- Some yarn or string
- Oil pastel set to share
- Chenille sticks
- Some yarn or string
- Scraps of stiff paper of any kind
These are the recommended materials for this course. All sizes are approximate. On your first day of class, your instructor may recommend additional optional materials. Our Instructors will do their best to accommodate alternative materials whenever possible.
