Join us for the gala premiere of Brown Girl Begins, director Sharon Lewis' Afrofuturist feature debut, and a prequel to Nalo Hopkinson's award-winning novel Brown Girl in the Ring.
Celebrate Black Future Month with director, Sharon Lewis, author Nalo Hopkinson and stars of the film, Brown Girl Begins. Join them at a gala reception with performances by musicians featured in the film, including legendary calypsonian David Rudder, blues dynamo Shakura S’Aida and opera sensation Measha Brueggergosman. A hosted Q & A will follow the 6 pm screening.
Tickets include admission to either 6 pm or 9 pm screening in Jackman Hall and entry to the reception in Walker Court from 7:30-10 pm. All events happen at the Art Gallery of Ontario, 317 Dundas Street West, Toronto.
5:30 pm - Jackman Hall doors open for 6 pm screening
6:00 pm - Screening of Brown Girl Begins in Jackman Hall
7:00 pm - Walker Court doors open for reception
7:30 pm - Red carpet and reception hosted by Nicole Stamp in Walker Court. Cash bar and free snacks available
8:00 pm - Live performances by David Rudder, Shakura S’Aida and Measha Brueggergosman in Walker Court
8:45 pm - Jackman Hall doors open for 9 pm screening; Reception continues in Walker Court with book signing by Nalo Hopkinson and photo-ops with the cast of Brown Girl Begins
9:00 pm - Screening of Brown Girl Begins in Jackman Hall
