Close Encounters: Emma Nishimura
In response to the David Blackwood: Myth and Legend exhibition join artist Emma Nishimura as she looks at prints from the AGO collection in conversation with Alexa Greist, Curator and R. Fraser Elliott Chair, Prints and Drawings.
Emma Nishimura works across printmaking, photography, sculpture, and installation to explore memory and loss rooted in family and inherited narratives. Her research centers on the forced incarceration of Japanese Canadians during WWII and its generational impact. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Royal Ontario Museum, Royal Academy of Arts (London), and Taimiao Art Gallery (Beijing). Her work is held in collections such as the AGO, ROM, Japanese Canadian National Museum, and Library of Congress. Emma has received awards from the Ontario Arts Council, IPCNY, and the Queen Sonja Print Award. She holds an MFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and is an Assistant Professor at OCAD University.
