1 hour 23 minutes

El Anatsui has gained widespread international acclaim in recent years for his dazzling metallic tapestries made from liquor bottle tops. His work is currently on view at the AGO, and his recent metal-cloth series and sculptures in wood, ceramic, and mixed media will be part of the world premiere of the artist’s first-ever career retrospective at the Royal Ontario Museum’s Institute for Contemporary Culture in 2010. The exhibition will then travel to New York for the reopening of the Museum for African Art in 2011.

El Anatsui’s work has recently been exhibited at the Fowler Museum, Los Angeles; the Des Moines Art Centre; and P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, New York. His work is in many public collections including the Ghana National Art Collection, Accra; the National Museum of African Art, Washington; and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Ghanian born Anatsui is Professor of Sculpture at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he has lectured since 1975.

Presented in collaboration with the Canadian Art Foundation.
