Seamus O'Regan and Alexa Greist on the Impact of David Blackwood's Art

Wednesday, October 29, 7 pm, 2025
Baillie Court, Art Gallery of Ontario

Join the Honourable Seamus O'Regan in Conversation with Alexa Greist, AGO Curator and R. Fraser Elliott Chair, Prints and Drawings as part of the exhibition David Blackwood: Myth & Legend.  One of Canada's best-known printmakers, David Blackwood (1941–2022) put onto paper an enduring vision of Newfoundland. Born and raised on Bonavista Bay, his hauntingly beautiful images - suffused with struggle and myth - are drawn from childhood memories, dreams, superstitions, legends, and oral traditions. Through conversations and questions, O'Regan will share stories about the impact of David Blackwood's art on Newfoundland and himself.

O’Regan’s political breadth is evident in his ministerial portfolio. He has served in several key Cabinet positions, including Minister of Natural Resources, Minister of Indigenous Services, and Minister of Veterans Affairs, Minister for Seniors and Minister of Labour – all underscoring his commitment to addressing critical societal issues and labor market dynamics. His work on the Atlantic Accord Agreement exemplifies his dedication to regional economic development and energy policy.

His journalistic contributions earned him nominations for the prestigious Gemini Award and a place on Maclean’s Magazine’s “100 Young Canadians to Watch” list. He also broke new ground by becoming the first journalist named to Canada’s Top 40 Under 40.

O’Regan’s academic credentials are equally impressive. He holds a Master of Philosophy degree from the University of Cambridge, complemented by studies in political science and Irish studies at St. Francis Xavier University and University College Dublin, respectively. His multidisciplinary background informs his nuanced approach to policymaking and public discourse.

As a Bell Let’s Talk Ambassador, O’Regan has been at the forefront of destigmatizing mental health issues, leveraging his media expertise to foster greater understanding and communication. He’s vocal about human rights and for the LGBTQ+ community. His role as a Distinguished Media Innovator at Ryerson University’s Digital Media Zone further demonstrates his commitment to nurturing the next generation of media professionals and digital innovators.
