In the face of constant change over the past year, art fairs, exhibitions, and festivals have been forced to get creative with how they operate. Included among that list is DesignTO, Canada’s largest annual celebration of all things contemporary design. With a packed lineup (including a kickoff party on January 22), this year’s “Distanced and Digital” festival is set to showcase the very best in design culture from across Canada. Most events are free and either virtual or under adherence to lockdown regulations. Discover what’s on the (virtual) horizon for design in 2021.

This two-day symposium invites design innovators to share their perspectives on the how and why of making design reflective of diverse voices. Featured speakers include Andrew Do, Annie Jean-Baptiste, Lee Jones, Matthew Hickey, Maya Mahgoub Desai and Veronica Madonna, Jahan Mantin, Shelagh McCartney, and Rain Michaels.
Beyond the Surface: The Behaviour of Digital Ceramics
A virtual exhibition featuring the collaborative work of Haptek Lab, the Creative Technology Lab at FCAD, Boston Valley Terracotta, and the Architectural Ceramic Assemblies Workshop. This exhibition aims to challenge and expand our understanding of digital design, ceramic manufacturing and materiality. Learn even more at the Digital Architectural Ceramics Symposium on January 30 from 1 to 2 pm.
A group of Industrial Design students grapple with living through the COVID-19 pandemic, social upheaval, and ongoing feelings of uncertainty. This digital exhibition shines the spotlight on emerging design creatives studying at Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) in Toronto. Similarly, Tables, Chairs & Other Unrelated Objects 10 Retrospective presents a virtual look back at original furniture designs also by OCAD U students.
