In 2020, activism and the quest for social justice are as popular as they were in the 1960s. This prevailing push for progressive change is particularly strong among young people, especially Generation Z. Since activism is vast and challenging to navigate, it is important that youth keen on joining the fight seek out guidance from community members with years of experience on the front lines… Enter Syrus Marcus Ware.

The AGO Youth Council is a dynamic group of art-loving young people, many of whom are aspiring activists with a lot to say and do in the world. Recently the Council invited Toronto-based activist and artist Syrus Marcus Ware for what they call a Skillz Share. Ware, who is a core organizer with Black Lives Matter Toronto, joined the Youth Council via Zoom to share a comprehensive presentation on the ins-and-outs of arts-based political organizing.

Starting by challenging Council members to explore the issues they are most passionate about, while also considering how those issues may intersect, Ware covered the full gamut of entry-level activist knowledge. How to join existing social justice groups, the importance of preparedness at protests, incorporating art and colour into activism, and taking time for self-care were among the vital subjects he addressed. Take a look below.

Following the presentation, Youth Council members conducted a Q & A with their guest, posing more specific questions. We recently connected with council member Em Farquhar-Barrie to hear their major take-aways from this important and impactful Skillz Share.

“In addition to learning the logistics of becoming an activist, displayed throughout Syrus’s handy slideshow, I gained a new outlook into participating in community activism as a disabled, chronically-ill, trans youth. It was so important to learn about doing activism in new creative ways to ensure activism is accessible and inclusive to those who are most marginalized. I found hope by hearing Syrus emphasize that ‘it is not the revolution if all of us are not involved’, explaining a variety of ways of how to get involved. It was also helpful to hear the friendly reminders of preparing and packing for actions that may otherwise be forgotten. As well as tips for organizing and/or participating in the current times of COVID-19. Syrus’s energy, creative engagement and knowledge are encouraging and uplifting. I have so much gratitude for Syrus’s work in the community and feel privileged to learn from his How to be an Activist Skillz Share.”
