#RetroAGO: Mick and the ships
On a regular June afternoon in 2013, AGO staff were going about their usual routines to close up for the night. But with just a half-hour left, guess who showed up: none other than Mick Jagger, rock legend and art enthusiast!
In town for The Rolling Stones’ North American 50 and Counting tour, Mick took some time away from Keith and the boys to check out the AGO. The Gallery’s former Director and CEO Matthew Teitelbaum took him on an impromptu tour of Lost in the Memory Palace, an exhibition of complex visual and sound installations by internationally celebrated Canadian artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller. They were joined by then-AGO President Maxine Granovsky Gluskin, who happened to be in the building for a meeting.
Mick’s favourite moment came as they visited the Thomson Collection of Ship Models, on the Concourse Level of the Gallery. He made sure to spend time examining the tiny, intricate details of the ships, marvelling at the craftsmanship. It was the perfect spot for a photo opp.
