Saying goodbye to O'Keeffe

After making its only stop in North America here at the AGO, we said goodbye to the Georgia O’Keeffe exhibition at the end of July.
O'Keeffe certainly made an impression in Toronto. Over its three-month run from April 22 to July 30, the exhibition drew a total of 187,673 visitors! As the largest showing of Georgia O’Keeffe’s work to ever take place in Canada (with over 80 works on display), this memorable exhibition has rightfully earned a spot among the top 10 most-visited exhibitions in AGO history.
In a review of the exhibition, the National Post noted that “A century after her work was first displayed, O’Keeffe has finally become an artist for whom the work speaks for itself. The chance to see her as she would have intended causes the myths surrounding her work and her life to dissolve against her true legacy: the solidity and stark softness of her art.”
With the AGO’s Associate Curator of Canadian Art Georgiana Uhlyarik at the helm of this installation, Georgia O’Keeffe showcased one of the most influential female figures in American modernism in a way Canadians had never seen before. Exploring O’Keeffe’s connection to the landscape, architecture and nature, with a special focus on her work in abstractionism, the exhibition displayed the trajectory of O’Keeffe’s career from New York to New Mexico through her paintings and photographs.
AGO visitors took to social media to share their experiences. Re-live this magical exhibition with some of our favourite posts celebrating this profoundly influential artist.
We're teary saying goodbye to O'Keeffe, but we’re already gearing up for our next major exhibition: the highly-anticipated journey through all things gothic, Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters, an in-depth look at the famous filmmaker’s artistic inspirations from his personal collection.
