Between park hangs in the sunshine and putting together our many summer exhibitions, we’ve been busy here at the AGO. But there’s so much going on outside of our orbit, reminding us that Toronto really is an amazing city of arts and culture. Check out some of our top picks of happenings in the scene this September. And don’t forget – the AGO is open on Labour Day!
It's a bird...it's a plane...nope, it’s the Royal Ontario Museum’s Blue Whale. One of the biggest shows – both literally and figuratively – to hit Toronto this summer was the Out of the Depths: The Blue Whale Story. The opportunity to see an 80-foot, fully articulated skeleton of a blue whale (and the first and only real preserved blue whale heart in the world) is too cool to pass up. Be sure to see it before it closes on September 4.
Heard about the thriving contemporary opera scene in Toronto but wondered if it’s for you? Now is your chance to try it out with no strings attached. Tapestry Opera is putting on an innovative production at historic Todmorden Mills throughout September, opening on September 2. Bandits in the Valley is a fun new folk-music-meets-opera work, based on the local history of the Don Valley as a haven for smugglers and bandits during the 1860s. A partnership with the City of Toronto, the performances are free to the public, but tickets are limited – so make sure to book yours now!
Over at Harbourfront Centre, they have not one but two (!) food festivals coming up in September. There’s something for everyone: one dedicated to all things Hot & Spicy (September 1–4) and the other devoted to Veg Food (September 8–10). We’re getting hungry just thinking about them.
The end of September also brings Nuit Blanche back to the city from sunrise to sunset. This year’s theme is Many Possible Futures, marking Canada's 150th anniversary. Stay tuned to AGOinsider for more information on what we have in store for this year’s Nuit Blanche at the AGO!
(Oh, and have we mentioned we have our own exhibition, Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters, opening on September 30? No big deal.)
