Museums and cultural institutions around the world are facing unique challenges in 2020 and the shape of the museum is being reimagined and reinvented. MOCA Los Angeles’s Director of Education and Senior Curator of Programs, Amanda Hunt joined AGO’s Associate Curator of Photography, Julie Crooks for a conversation about what museums look like today and what steps need to be taken to carry them into the future.

In the wake of the anti-Black racism protests taking place across the world, Crooks and Hunt discussed the need for safe spaces, accountability and the urgency  ̶  now more than ever  ̶  to open the floor for tough and uncomfortable discussions about ongoing structural racism across all levels of museums. They agree that these discussions are vital for all parts of the museum from Visitor Welcome to Gallery space and up to Board and Leadership teams. Hunt recommended museums look to their education teams to echo the important work they have been doing for years to create safe and accessible spaces for their audiences
