The Toronto International Film Festival opens this week, and we’re showing several TIFF screenings in our very own Jackman Hall.

Have you spotted any stars cuddling rescue puppies, or grabbing a coffee in Leslieville? In Toronto we know this influx of celebrities means TIFF season is here! Just in time for things to kick off on September 5, we’ve rounded up a list of several amazing TIFF screenings in the AGO’s Jackman Hall. From documentaries to dramedies and everything in between, this year’s lineup is a star-studded showcase of dynamic and diverse talent in all genres of film.

The Barefoot Emperor
Europe is in crisis. The EU has dissolved and is looking for a modern emperor to take the helm. Could it be the king of the Belgians, who is recovering from a gunshot wound to the ear at a sanatorium in Croatia? A pitch-perfect satire on Brexit-era Europe, this dramedy comes from award-winning directors Peter Brosens and Jessica Woodworth.
The Giant
A sleepy town in Georgia is rocked by a series of murders, just as a teenager’s missing boyfriend suddenly reappears. Coincidence? Or is something more sinister at play? Director David Raboy takes the classic coming-of-age story and gives it a dark, thrilling twist in his TIFF debut.
Our Lady of the Nile

Director Atiq Rahim’s adaptation of the French novel Notre-Dame du Nil showcases an ensemble cast of Rwandan schoolgirls coming of age at a Catholic boarding school in 1973. With events at the school eerily foreshadowing the Rwandan genocide and Civil War in 1994, the film is a definite “must-see.”
The Last Porno Show

An ode to Toronto’s underbelly, The Last Porno Show tells the story of a man who inherits his father’s dilapidated adult film cinema. With unparalleled wit, Toronto director Kire Paputts explores gentrification, loss and our search for love in all the wrong places.
Kuessipan
Another Canadian entry, Kuessipan follows the story of two Innu teenagers whose different life circumstances threaten to tear their friendship apart. Adapted from Naomi Fontaine’s acclaimed novel of the same name, this film is directed by Canadian, Myriam Verreault.
