This fall, the AGO is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Aimia | AGO Photography Prize with two special projects: a two-day symposium and a brand new publication. First up: VISIBILITY, a symposium that will bring together artists and jurors from throughout the Prize’s decade of activity alongside prominent national and international artists, writers and scholars to ask questions about power, urgency, representation and photography.

The symposium, presented in partnership with Aperture magazine, will take place at the AGO on December 3 and 4, 2017, and will feature all four artists shortlisted for this year’s Prize—Liz Johnson Artur, Raymond Boisjoly, Taisuke Koyama and Hank Willis Thomas—in dialogue with artists such as Annie MacDonell, Awol Erizku, Lyle Ashton Harris, Michèle Pearson Clarke, Sandra Brewster, and Zun Lee. Plus, this year’s jurors—AGO curator Sophie Hackett, artist Ken Lum and chief curator of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, Eva Respini—will be joined by prominent curators, thinkers and writers to consider these questions, including Aperture magazine editor Michael Famighetti, National Museum of African American History and Culture curator Rhea Combs and the AGO’s Curator, Indigenous Art, Wanda Nanibush.

The symposium will culminate in the announcement of this year’s winner of the Aimia | AGO Photography Prize and the launch of a special publication that marks a decade of extraordinary support for artists working at the forefront of photography in Canada and around the world. Ten Years: Aimia | AGO Photography Prize, 2008 – 2017 will be available at shopAGO beginning December 5.

Tickets to VISIBILITY go on sale today and are available here. A full symposium schedule will be posted on November 7.

The Aimia | AGO Photography Prize Exhibition is on now until January 14 and is included in general admission. Visit it soon to cast your vote for who will win the $50,000 prize! Voting closes on November 5 2017, at 11:59 pm EST.
