You were REALLY at home with monsters!

Guillermo del Toro is officially a hit! His film The Shape of Water earned 13 Oscar nominations (leading the pack). At the AGO we are also celebrating the success of his recent exhibition. In early January, we said goodbye to Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters. As the only Canadian stop on the exhibition's tour, we saw a rush of visitors from Toronto and beyond release their inner monster.

Thanks to the thousands of you who came to the show (sometimes more than once), At Home with Monsters now takes its place in AGO history. Over its three-month run from September 30 to January 7, the exhibition drew a total of 192,050 visitors! The show – curated from the famous filmmaker’s personal collection of horror artifacts and pieces from the AGO Collection – has earned a spot among our top 10 most-visited exhibitions. We couldn’t have done it without you!

It wasn’t just the exhibition visitors came to see: You also came out in droves to the two packed, horror-themed film series in Jackman Hall, a talk series featuring icons like R.L. Stine, a free book signing with Guillermo del Toro himself, a family Monster Bash and a special First Thursday headlined by Peaches.

Spent the morning getting inspired by the Guillermo del Toro exhibit at the AGO. Now, those of you who know me probably wonder why I went to see it if I’m not a big scary movie fan. But for me it was about delving into del Toro’s artistic process. Seeing how what he creates artistically is a form of self expression. Seeing how much the exact shades and hues of color he uses in his films are really important. Seeing these monsters he creates and transforms through his eyes. That was amazing. A fan of his work or not, you have to admit he is an amazing artist and storyteller.
