Art, Library or Archive Gifts

Collection building is one of the most vital and rewarding activities of any museum. Since the AGO’s founding, nearly 80 percent of our collection has been gifted by donors who are committed to sharing their passion for great art.

Under the Cultural Property Export and Import Act, special incentives have been established to encourage Canadians to keep cultural property of outstanding significance and national importance in Canada. Artworks may be gifted to the AGO and certified by the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board, keeping these gifts exempt from capital gains tax.

The AGO is committed to excellence in the acquisition of art and library and archival materials for present and future generations. Acquisitions are decided through a formal process. Offers are first reviewed by the Curatorial department, which determines if the work is suitable for the AGO Collection and that it adheres to the Gallery’s Acquisition Policy.

To submit an inquiry, please contact [email protected] and provide as much information on the materials as possible, including images.
