Art & Ideas: Ivory Sculpture and the Arts of the Book

Jackman Hall, Art Gallery of Ontario

Catherine Yvard with Sasha Suda

Join the Courtauld Institute’s Catherine Yvard and AGO associate curator of European Art for a short introduction to the Gothic Ivories Project. Launched at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London under the direction of Prof. John Lowden with the generous support of Thomson Works of Art, it is an online catalogue of Gothic and Neo-Gothic sculptures from public and private collections around the world. 3800 objects are now accessible to all, illustrated with over 10,000 images.

Yvard will also explore the parallels between carved ivories, manuscripts and incunables from the 14th to the 16th century, from the point of view of their iconography, but also of their function and of their patrons.

Sasha Suda is Assistant Curator, European Art at Art Gallery of Ontario.

Catherine Yvard is Project Manager, Gothic Ivories Project at the Courtauld Institute. Yvard completed a degree in sociology and political science in France before turning to art history at Trinity College, Dublin where she completed a PhD in 2005, focusing on a late 15th-century French book of hours (Dublin, Chester Beatty Library, ms. 89). She has worked on digitization projects at the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin, the Bodleian Library in Oxford and the British Library in London, cataloguing medieval illuminated manuscripts. Yvard also specialises in the study of late-medieval Books of Hours and is particularly interested in the transition from manuscript to printed, and the transmission of patterns through time and space.

Curator Sasha Suda and conservator Lisa Ellis of the AGO, together with Catherine Yvard lead an exclusive workshop and dining experience called, Art & Ideas: Gothic Ivories.
