“There are things which nobody would see unless I photographed them”

Maia-Mari Sutnik, Curator Emeritus, Photography, examines a group of compelling photographs by Diane Arbus (1923-1971) from the AGO’s large holdings of the artist’s work. Arbus’s photographs have polarized debate since her landmark exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1972 - a year after her death.  Her stark black and white images are unsettling and explore bizarre interior worlds.  With compassion and respect, she portrays those who are marginalized by society - the odd, the eccentric, the shunned, and the isolated.
