Hammershøi Curator’s Talk: Kasper Monrad

April 13, 2016, 7 – 8:30pm
Jackman Hall, Art Gallery of Ontario

Join Kasper Monrad, Chief Curator, SMK – The National Gallery of Denmark for a talk about the celebrated Danish painter, Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916). Monrad is the curator of Painting Tranquility: Masterworks by Vilhelm Hammershøi from SMK which features a selection of paintings from across Hammershøi’s body of work, including several of the quiet home interiors for which he earned the title “de stillestuers maler” (the painter of tranquil rooms). Kasper Monrad will explore Hammershøi’s four main genres—reduced landscapes, unpopulated urban cityscapes, portraits, and spare, sunlight-infused interiors—offering an intimate look into his life and enigmatic artwork.

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Painting Tranquility: Masterworks by Vilhelm Hammershøi from SMK
