19th-Century Photographs of Japan: Western Visions, Japanese Identities
February 18 – April 25, 1999
EXHIBITION OVERVIEW
This intimate exhibition of some 20 hand-tinted albumen prints and photographic albums reveals the impact of the invention of photography upon Japanese culture. The beautifully coloured images are a curious hybrid of pictorial representation and historical documentation, and an expression of Western fascination with aspects of Japanese life and landscape.
Included with Pay-What-You-Can admission.
