The Decades Project: 1900-1909

EXHIBITION OVERVIEW

The Decades Project: 1900-1909 is the first in a planned series of installations organized by the AGO and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra designed to bring together visual art and music to reveal how artists and musicians expressed both the optimism and skepticism of their time.

This fall and winter visitors will have the opportunity to listen to Claude Debussy's 1905 work La mer (The Sea) while looking at Armand Guillaumin's 1907 painting of the Mediterranean. These artists pioneered new approaches to musical composition and landscape painting, replacing traditional structures with highly subjective, impressionistic sketches and fragments.  These works were made in the first decade of the 1900s, a period that helped shape who and what we are today: think of film, radio, airplanes, Sigmund Freud and Albert Einstein.

In addition to this multisensory gallery experience, there will be on October 25 a related chamber music concert at the AGO to be performed by The TSO Chamber Soloists.

We also invite you to attend the TSO's performances of Debussy's La mer at Roy Thomson Hall on October 21 and 24. After these concerts, Kenneth Brummel, the AGO's Assistant Curator of Modern Art, will participate in an onstage discussion about Debussy and Guillaumin.
