Featuring 22 works by 16 Inuit artists, this is the second of two installations showcasing newly acquired artworks from the Dr. Ronald M. Haynes Collection. Included in the display are works on paper by renowned artists Pitseolak Ashoona, Jessie Oonark, and Pudlo Pudlat, as well as small soapstone sculptures by Mathew Aqigaaq, George Arluk, Seepee Ippellie, and Nootaraloo. Curated by Renée der Avoird, AGO, Associate Curator of Canadian Art, these works are all promised gifts to the AGO.
Originally from England and based in Toronto, Haynes began collecting in the 1970s, acquiring works from various Toronto galleries and auction houses. Haynes’ passion for modern Canadian art, finds expression in his dedication to Inuit sculpture and works on paper. In addition to these works on view, his holdings include remarkable artworks by Kenojuak Ashevak, Nooveya Ippellie, Joe Talirunili, Lucy Tasseor, and Pitaloosie Saila.
