EXHIBITION OVERVIEW

A landmark in video art, Vancouver artist Stan Douglas's Hors-champs, 1992, shows a jazz quartet from two simultaneous points of view, one conventionally focused on the ensemble or soloist, the other on the waiting, watching, listening and supporting that goes into a triumphal group performance. Among the most celebrated works of contemporary Canadian art, Hors-champs has not been seen in Toronto in nearly ten years. Presented as a component of Re-play, a city-wide installation of works by artists who are interested in the culture of popular music – the soundtracks of our lives.

Stan Douglas' Hors-Champs is presented as part of the exhibition ,soundtracks: Re-play, curated by Catherine Crowston and Barbara Fischer and produced by The Edmonton Art Gallery in partnership with the Blackwood Gallery (UTM), the MacKenzie Art Gallery and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection with the support of the Department of Canadian Heritage - Museums Assitance Program.
