Reading Portraits: Reality, Appearance, Interpretation

October 2, 2004 - January 30, 2005

EXHIBITION OVERVIEW

This installation presents five centuries of portraits selected from the AGO’s European Collection as a complement to the exhibition Modigliani: Beyond the Myth. As an artistic genre, portraiture attempts to reconcile how we appear and how we wish to be represented. These works demonstrate the various strategies artists have used to present their sitters, from the realism of Frans Hals, William Hogarth and John Singer Sargent to the abstraction of Pablo Picasso and Raymond Duchamp-Villon and the expressionism of Otto Dix.
