Speaking about Landscape, Speaking to the Land

February 4 - April 24, 2005

EXHIBITION OVERVIEW

Highlights of the Canadian Collection

This new installation of highlights from the permanent collection explores the breadth of Canadian landscape painting through an Aboriginal lens. In the centre of the installation is Anishnabe (Ojibway) artist Rebecca Belmore’s installation Ayum-ee-aawach Oomama-mowan: Speaking to Their Mothers, which is an enormous megaphone. The artist toured this work across Canada in the early 1990s, inviting Aboriginal people to address the land directly through it. Here it has many Canadian landscapes to speak to, inviting visitors to reflect on changing notions of the land and the politics that inflect our understanding of place.

Curated by Richard Hill.
