Tissot and the Victorian Woman

September 27, 2002 - February 2, 2003

EXHIBITION OVERVIEW

The French artist J.J. Tissot (1836-1902) moved to London in 1871 and spent 11 years exploring the image of the "modern woman" in his paintings and prints. In the context of engravings by contemporary English printmakers, this exhibition looks at Tissot's interpretation of Victorian femininity and the spaces inhabited by these women. The Gallery is grateful to Allan and Sondra Gotlieb for the donation in 1994 of their Tissot print collection.
