Close Looking: Anna Maria Walton Beck Boulton

Join Georgiana Uhlyarik, Fredrik S. Eaton Curator of Canadian Art in conversation with AGO Conservators Sherry Phillips and Meaghan Monaghan as they take a closer look into the life of Anna Maria Walton Beck Boulton (1799-1862), sister-in-law to D'Arcy Boulton Jr who built The Grange House in 1817. On International Women’s Day 2021 they will explore the challenges of researching women’s lives in historical records, highlighting the information and connections gained through studying two pieces in the AGO collection: a portrait of Anna Maria Walton Beck Boulton and a shawl of unknown origin that belonged to the sitter. The discussion will range from 19th century fashion to textile production to the history of Toronto and the Boulton family.
