Lawren Harris

(1885, Brantford, Ontario – 1970, Vancouver, British Columbia)

Inspired by his mystical connection to nature, Harris was one the Group’s best-known members. After studying painting in Europe, Harris helped finance the construction of a studio building in Toronto in 1913, the first of its kind to provide inexpensive workspace for artists. Throughout the 1920’s, he explored the north shore of Lake Superior and, following a trip to Nunvaut and Greenland in the early 1930’s, his interest progressed beyond landscape and into abstraction. He left Canada to seek transcendental subjects in New Hampshire, New Mexico, and eventually, Vancouver.
