Beat the winter blues with art

Jennifer McGregor, Tangle

Did you know that research says viewing art provides the same pleasure as being in love? Sounds pretty great to us! A visit to the AGO might do the trick, but there’s nothing like bringing vibrant, curated colours into your own home. Whether you’re looking for something short-term or you’re ready to commit to an artwork, the AGO’s Art Rental and Sales team can help you every step of the way. See some of the mood-boosting highlights from their current collection below:

In her work Tangle (above) artist Jennifer McGregor uses an array of vibrant, thick strokes to create incredible texture on the canvas. McGregor is known for her colourful, textured and asymmetrical works in acrylic, watercolour and oil. An Albertan native, she now lives and works in Toronto.

Sam Paonessa, Wolf Creek Waterfall

Sam Paonessa hails from Niagara Falls, Ontario and specializes in impressionistic landscapes inspired by places like Georgian Bay, and Killarney and Algonquin Provincial Parks, to name a few. For many years he travelled and painted plein air landscapes (where artists leave their studio to create in nature) in North America and Italy. Wolf Creek Waterfall has a mystical presence that draws the eye along with the flowing waterfall.

Janet Read, When Spring Comes

Artist Janet Read draws inspiration from natural beauty, like clouds and the play of light on water, which are both recurring motifs in her work. This is evident in the subtlety saturated canvas in When Spring Comes. Read describes her work as atmospheric abstraction and cites her love of travel as a profound influence on her work.

Claire Desjardins, I Said Yes in My Head

An award-winning abstract painter, Claire Desjardins grew up in Montreal. She describes her art as experimental and she tests unconventional tools in her in her work to see the effect it has on her canvas. See what she means in this interview with The Artist Project. Desjardins has collaborated with a number of companies, include tech giant Microsoft and retailer Anthropologie, and frequently donates her work to charitable initiatives.
