Know your copy(rights)!
Copyright law may not sound like a sexy topic, but it’s an important one for artists. That’s why the AGO is offering a free workshop on copyright for emerging artists, with the AGO’s Copyright Assistant Eva Athanasiu on May 23 in the E.P. Taylor Library & Archives.
Come learn about:
- Why not having a clear understanding of copyright law can impact an artist’s income.
- Moral Rights: Learn how the law aims to let artists specify how their work is presented and what their work is associated with. Artists have the right to object to their art associating with a product, company or cause that harms their reputation, and to any changes to their art that might have the same effect – for example, if someone added bows to your artwork. That’s what happened to artist Michael Snow. In the 1982 Ontario case, Snow v. Eaton Centre Ltd., the court ruled the mall was wrong to add bows to Snow’s sculpture of geese.
- Fair dealing: Even though a work is copyrighted, there are exceptions where others can use it without permission. Find out what these exceptions could be.
