Links we’re loving: Venice Biennale edition
The 2019 Venice Biennale launched last week. Here are some of our favourite missives from the feted bi-annual survey of the very best of contemporary art.
Every two years, the contemporary art world turns all eyes on Italy, for the spectacular Venice Biennale – a global survey of the best in contemporary art. Curated by Ralph Rugoff, director of London's Hayward Gallery since 2006, the theme for 2019 is May you live in interesting times.
With a sun-soaked opera about climate change, a caged robotic arm sweeping up fake blood, and the controversial hull of a formerly sunken migrant ship, the 58th iteration of the world famous Biennale is certainly interesting. To celebrate, we’ve pulled together a list of some of our favourite stories about the Venice Biennale.
International news source Al Jazeera showcased the Biennale in a series of videos, highlighting the political nature of the art at this year’s Biennale.
Canadian Art published several stories about Isuma, the Inuit artists collective that represented Canada in our National pavilion.
Featuring live streaming video installations from northern Baffin Island, Isuma’s participation marks the first time Inuit artists have represented Canada in Venice as noted by CBC News.
Nunatsiaq News also covered the Isuma installation at the Canadian Pavilion, providing a 5 min clip from one of the videos streamed live from northern Baffin Island to Venice.
Canadian Artist Zadie Xa was mentioned in a piece about performance art at the Biennale in The Art Newspaper. Featuring brightly coloured costumes, orcas, and the artist’s connection to nature and shamanism, Xa performed her piece Grandmother Mago.
