Back when we were still able to gather in the Dr. Anne Tanenbaum Gallery School, the AGO Seniors Social was the place to be for art lovers 65 years and over. The monthly program paired themed tours of the AGO Collection with an artmaking activity inviting participants to learn, share and engage with art and each other. Today, we’re still connecting with older adults through recorded videos, thanks to the generous support of Lead Sponsor Amica Senior Lifestyles.

This online version of AGO Seniors Social explores abstract landscape through art, conversation and artmaking. Immerse yourself in the landscape with these videos:

Art Conversation
In this conversation, you’ll join AGO Art Educator Doris Purchase, and Gallery Guides Gavin O’Hara and Jeanette Sandler, as they explore artwork in the AGO Collection. The group takes a closer look at abstract works by artists Wassily Kandinsky and Kazuo Nakamura to provide insight into the activity to come.

Art Instruction
Following the conversation, tune into an artmaking demonstration led by AGO Art InstructorLauren McKinley-Renzetti. You’ll learn to create your own abstract landscape inspired by the geometric shapes and bold colours used by artists Wassily Kandinsky and Lawren Harris.

Artmaking
All together now...In this video, you’re invited to watch McKinley-Renzetti, Purchase, O’Hara and Sandler make their own art projects using things they learned in the Conversation and Instruction videos. The group explores their own versions of artwork using varied materials to demonstrate how you might adapt to what you have available at home. Watch and create your own work as the group makes connections to artwork by Wassily Kandinsky, Lawren Harris and Kazuo Nakamura.

We hope you join in the fun and get creating at home. If you participate, be sure to share your work online with #AGOMakes for a chance to be featured on our website. Want more? Check back in the fall for more Seniors Social programming.
