It’s a busy time at the AGO. Between our critically acclaimed exhibition Rebecca Belmore: Facing the Monumental (on until October 21) and preparing for our major fall show, Anthropocene (opening September 28), we’ve got a lot going on.
And we’re not alone. Toronto’s arts and culture scene is jam-packed with amazing events this fall. From museum openings to literary festivals, fashion exhibits and more, we’ve rounded up some of our top picks to check out this month.
MOCA Toronto opens
On September 22, the doors open to the new Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto Canada (MOCA Toronto). Housed in a 99-year-old building, the museum opens with a group show featuring 16 artists including Jeneen Frei Njootli, Barbara Kruger and Awol Erizku. The inaugural exhibition, titled BELIEVE, runs through January 6, 2019.
Calling all book lovers
Mark your calendars for The Word on the Street on September 23 at Harbourfront. Now in its 28th year, the one-day book and magazine festival is the perfect place to stock up on reading material. With author readings for all ages, workshops and panels for aspiring writers and journalists, there’s something for everyone.
Fashion forward
Have you seen the Royal Ontario Museum’s exhibition Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion? Pushing the boundaries of traditional fashion by exploring how fashion, art, design and technology come together, don’t miss this exhibition devoted to the Dutch fashion designer’s 2008–2015 collections. The show closes October 8, so catch it before it sashays away.
Art after dark
Nuit Blanche returns on September 29. The city-wide art celebration features 450 artists and 81 projects across six Toronto neighbourhoods including, for the first time, Scarborough. Stop by the AGO to check out our immersive Nuit Blanche video installation, Ancient Forest Alliance, by Anthropocene artists Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier. Stay tuned for more details.
