Work it at the AGO

Coffee shops and co-working spaces may give you the reason you need to get out of your pajamas. But do they inspire you the way an art-filled environment can? Come and plug in here!

Need a jolt of inspiration to get back into your best work or study habits after the holidays? Or maybe you’re not finding the Zen you need to write in your journal? Swap the coffee shop for a more inspiring setting. Whether you’re writing (or reading) a novel, studying for midterms or working remotely, the AGO is the perfect place to get cozy. We’ve got comfy seating, free Wi-Fi, quiet corners and of course, art to inspire you, bust through your writer’s block, or re-evaluate your company’s quarterly earnings.

You’re probably wondering about the feasibility of using a place that charges admission as your regular office, living room or café. But consider this: with a $35 Annual Pass (which is free for visitors 25 and under) or a membership, you can come in and out of the museum on an unlimited basis all year. That’s a lot cheaper than most co-working spaces, and it comes with some pretty great perks.

For a workspace with a view, try the David Milne Centre on Level 1 next to the Marvin Gelber Print & Drawing Study Centre. With works that give you a glimpse into the life of artist David Milne and a window looking out on to Grange Park, this space gives you the best of both worlds – inside and out. Or for even more natural light, Galleria Italia has soaring floor-to-ceiling windows that are even cheerful on rainy days – and the Espresso Bar is a nice bonus.

If you’re looking for a quiet corner, head over to the South Entrance and bask in the calmness of the couch seating surrounded by a selection of books next to the Edward P. Taylor Library & Archives. Or enjoy the serenity of the Education Commons where the sunlight peeks through the windows in just the right way.

For that little pick-me-up to get you through the day, stop by caféAGO and make your way down the recently renovated Concourse (Lower Level) corridor, where you’ll find a newly refreshed area just for you. There’s a farm table with enough space for you and your study buddies, and charging areas for your phones and other devices. And when you need a break from what you’re doing, simply spend some time walking through the galleries to get those creative juices flowing. Need a post-work cocktail? Join your friends or colleagues at happy hour in AGO Bistro, which offers a specially priced menu from 4 to 7 pm.

Make 2020 the year you make art a habit. Admission to the AGO Collection and all special exhibitions is always free for AGO Members, AGO Annual Pass holders and visitors 25 and under. For more information, please visit the website.
