Drawing Explorations

Age 11-13

With the AGO's amazing collection as inspiration, young artists learn a variety of drawing techniques and skills. In this course, we take concepts children love to explore - colour, light, form, texture - and build on them, encouraging exploration of drawing tools and materials, both traditional and not so traditional.

All materials are included. Meet in the Dr. Anne Tanenbaum Gallery School.

WEEKLY OUTLINE

Week 1: Mapping together. Inspired by Denyse Tomasos’ paintings and Cristi Belcourt’s Wisdom of the Universe, we will create a collaborative map and network drawing using traditional and not so traditional drawing materials.

Week 3: Tower Sampler. Working from found images we will create a drawing using mixed media techniques of transfer and collage - creating imaginary structures and compositions.

Week 3: Volumes. The monumental presence of sculptures in the AGO collection will inspire us on this day to work on drawings in charcoal, chalk pastel and conte, as we explore creation of organic volume, revealed by light and shade.

Week 2: Different perspective. This week we will learn some of the principles of perspective and isometric drawing, creating a cityscape and neighbourhood from our imagination.

Week 4: Drawing in the air. Working with linear materials we will create drawings that float in space rather than sit on a page, exploring sculptural implications of drawing.
