Video Art 101

Video Art 101 is an introductory course designed for those eager to explore the dynamic intersection of art and technology through the medium of video. Students will gain foundational skills in creating and editing video artworks, learning essential techniques for storytelling and visual composition; seen through the history video Art, installation and the AGO collections. Through hands-on projects, students will experiment with various styles and formats, developing their unique artistic voice while experimenting with tools for digital video production.

Animation

Bring your drawings to life in this animation course, where we’ll explore a range of animation techniques from old school to new. Create some of the earliest hand-drawn animation inventions like flip books and thaumatropes, experiment with stop-motion and Claymation, and dive into new technology with digital animation apps to create your own stories. 

This class is for beginners and returning students. The instructor will teach to each students' individual skill level. All materials are included.

Life Photography

Explore the beauty of the human form through photography. Students work both collaboratively and independently in directing a model, learn about photographic abstraction, lighting and various other techniques. This class is for those with basic photography skills. Students are required to bring their own cameras and tripods for each class.

This workshop meets in the Weston Family Learning Centre. Participants must be 18 or older. To get the most from this workshop, we suggest you take Introduction to Photography first.

Introduction to Film and Video Art

Always dreamed of being a filmmaker? Now’s your chance! Shoot footage on your own iPhone, edit the scenes on an iPad, and fade to black by the end of the course. Bring your own smartphone, iPad or laptop, or borrow an iPad from the AGO to use during class. The apps we will use include ProCamera, iMovie, and Stop Motion. Suitable for beginners. iPads may be borrowed from AGO during class time only.

Introduction to Photography

Get creative with your camera. This introduction to digital photography is for beginners and those with basic photographic skills, and is suitable for anyone making the transition from film to digital SLR. Learn how to photograph people, places and spaces. Students will focus on lighting, composition and in-camera editing for both close-ups such as portraits and life photography, and for wide shots with landscape or cityscape details. Bring your own SLR camera and don’t forget to bring the camera manual; course instructors may not know the operation of each camera.

Photography Explorations: Figure

Explore the beauty of the human form through photography. Students work both collaboratively and independently to learn about abstraction, lighting and various other photographic techniques. Students will also gain experience working with a model and visit the galleries to consider lighting and painterly techniques used by artists to create unique human representation.

This class is for beginners and those wishing to transition successfully from film to digital SLR cameras, suitable for photographers with knowledge of basic skills.
