Introduction to Sculpture - Intensive

Take your inspiration from the amazing array of sculptures on view in the galleries to create your own 3D masterpiece! Designed for the beginner who wishes to work in three dimensions with the objective of completing a sculptural work, the course includes an introduction to the materials and tools required to produce sculpture using an additive process in clay and a mold technique in plaster. In addition to skill development in observation and proportion, contemporary and historical approaches to sculpture fabrication will be discussed.

Making Miniatures

Take all your big ideas and make them tiny in this making miniatures course! We’ll explore all kinds of making on a small scale - mini paintings for your own mini art gallery, tiny food sculptures, little books and more! What teeny tiny masterpieces will you make?

CLAY WITH NESS LEE

Come hang out with local artist Ness Lee and explore all the possibilities with clay! In this workshop you will learn the simple techniques of slab work (working with sheets of clay that can be folded, curved, and joined to make different forms) and coiling (rolling out clay into a long thin sausage-like form that is wound round like a spring) to make your very own unique vessel. All ages welcome, all materials provided. This workshop is suitable for all skill levels.

Sculpting Together: Exploring Brian Jungen (ages 6-10 + Adult) 1 Day Worksho

Join us for our 1 day family workshops where children with an adult caregiver will explore artists and artworks in our collection and get inspired to create back in the studio. This season we're exploring the work of artist Brian Jungen together in the studio.

Sculpture Explorations: Figure

In this course, students will work with wire and polymer clay to study of the human form. They will develop skills of observation and proportion, while working with a life model. In addition to skill development, contemporary and historical approaches to figurative sculpture will be discussed. Students will have the opportunity to develop traditional life sculpture techniques within the classroom environment, while being encouraged to find their personal artistic voice as they interpret the figure through observation, stylization and abstraction.

Sculpture Explorations: Assemblage

What is material culture? When does an object become art? Reflecting on art historical periods such as Surrealism, Arte Povera, and conceptual art, we take on the excess of every-day materials in our daily lives. Students are invited to rethink the value and use of objects and to transform them into works that convey new meanings of representation and beauty.

Introduction to Sculpture

If you’re a beginner eager to sculpt your first creation, this is the course for you! Working with both clay and plaster, you will learn and apply contemporary and traditional sculpture techniques to create your very own unique artworks. Students will create a clay bust and learn a simple mold-making technique. 

The class includes all required materials. Students may choose to purchase supplementary materials.
