Art of the Matter: Diabetes Canada and Frederick Banting

In 2021, Diabetes Canada in partnership with the AGO hosted a unique art competition, Art of the Matter, to engage with community and commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the discovery of insulin.

The impact of diabetes is widespread and complex. Art of the Matter provided the wonderful opportunity to connect, support, and learn from each other while sharing experiences through art.

Sir Frederick Banting, the co-discoverer of insulin and its therapeutic potential, is not only a Canadian medical scientist, physician, and Nobel laureate but also an artist in the AGO Collection! Highly inspired by the Group of Seven, Banting started painting Canadian landscapes in the summer of 1920, three years before he received the Nobel Prize in Medicine.

Join Melissa Smith, Assistant Curator of Access and Learning, and Renata Azevedo Moreira, Assistant Curator of Canadian Art, as they discuss the winners of the Art of the Matter Competition and some of Banting’s artworks in the AGO’s Collection.
