Artist’s Talk: Christopher Cozier

Join Trinidadian artist, writer, and curator Christopher Cozier in conversation with video artist and filmmaker Esery Mondesir for a talk about his work and the historical and contemporary narratives that shape our understanding of the Caribbean. 

Presented in partnership with OCADU’s Global Experience Project generously supported by the Jack Weinbaum Family Foundation. 

Christopher Cozier is an artist living and working in Trinidad, and co-director of Alice Yard, Port of Spain. Through his art, ranging from notebook drawings to installations derived from recorded staged actions, Cozier investigates how Caribbean historical and current experiences can inform understandings of the wider contemporary world. His work is currently part of Forecast Form: Art in the Caribbean Diaspora, 1990s–Today, on tour from the MCA (Chicago), now on view at ICA (Boston). Recent exhibitions include the 11th Liverpool Biennial (2021); the 14th Sharjah Biennial (2019); The Sea is History, Historisk museum, Oslo (2019), Fragments of Epic Memory (2021) at the AGO, and documenta fifteen (2022) with Alice Yard.  He is a Prince Claus Award Laureate 2013 and was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2004. He received a BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute, College of Art, Baltimore, US (1986) and an MFA in Visual Arts, Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers, US (1988).  

Esery Mondesir is a Haitian-born video artist and filmmaker. He was a high school teacher and a labour organizer before receiving an MFA in film and video production from York University (Toronto) in 2017. Mondesir draws from personal and collective memory, official archives, vernacular records, and the Everyday to generate a reading of our society from its margins. Made in collaboration with fellow members of the Haitian diaspora in Havana, Cuba and Tijuana, Mexico, his latest films have been exhibited in art galleries and film festivals worldwide, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Montreal, the Open City Festival in London, UK, the Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York and the Art Gallery of Ontario.Mondesir is Assistant Professor at OCAD University in Toronto.
